| Andrea Winkler […] uses the atmosphere and conditions of the respective exhibition situations to stage volatile, ephemeral interventions. The beautiful appearance breaks, always falls apart –beauty seems to hold immanent strengths of power. Grace, lightness, glamour are merging indissolubly with decomposition, decay and dissolution. Andrea Winkler’s artistic »gestus« (approach) how she reacts on encountered spatial situations is irritating, causes ambivalences and is most of all mode of desiring. The spectator traces a scenic arranged room-choreography in the exhibition spaces of Anna-Catharina Gebbers Bibliothekswohnung Berlin (White Belt, 2007), discovers stylised proofs of the presence and simultaneously the absence of a person and an atmosphere of habitation. A red painted foil hanging in front of the window, crumpled-up, dropping towels in the bathroom, applied folds on advertisement images, stacked on the wall, coloured pills, carefully placed on the fridge are identifier of a fictional, glamorous and at the same time fragile lived in world. The subtle view, Andrea Winkler formulates in her spatial collages and assemblages evokes an emotional, mental moment of floatation of desire, loss, expectations and imagination. Like in the seemingly unapparent alterations in the rooms of the Hotel Alpenhof in St.Anton, Appenzell (Great vacancy, 2008). The adding of a piece of fabric next to a curtain, joined in between some lampshades wrinkled lampions, and the choreography of a firework with incorporated faulty moments – like this Andrea Winkler refers to the obscure shine of our everyday objects, their values, their apparent sensational nature and the character of rooms and interiors. Andrea Winkler potentially ephemeral traces of contingencies tare precisely this beautiful shine of surfaces and decay. In it superficies split, volumes get brittle, and Andrea Winkler’s sensitive undertow of seduction and destruction leads into a sphere of a spatially unfolding transgression. |
